So, without further ado, what are critics saying about Iron Man VR?

Attack of the Fanboy (Dean James)

“While many players may have not used their PlayStation VR in awhile, Marvel’s Iron Man VR is without a doubt the game to get people to dust it off and play again. Far more than a tech demo, Marvel’s Iron Man VR actually makes you feel like you are flying around and firing repulsor blasts in one of the most immersive VR experiences to date.”

Score: 4.5 / 5

Screen Rant (Cody Peterson)

“Iron Man VR shows off what VR is capable of in a way that few other games in the market have. There is something exhilarating about accelerating at breakneck speeds, cutting the thrusters, and shooting drones out of the sky just to go right back to flying through the air. Every single moment spent with the game is just as fun as the last. Camouflaj has raised the bar on what players should expect from VR developers in the future, which makes starting the next console generation all the more exciting. Anyone who owns the PSVR should pick up Iron Man VR immediately.”

Score: 4.5 / 5

Comicbook.com (Brandon Davis)

“Overall, Iron Man VR will provide fans of the titular character with a unique and highly engaging experience. They can build their own suit, store another custom as a loadout, and take to the skies to shoot down villainous foes… For PSVR owners, it’s a simple and safe choice to spend the $39.99 for this experience, but for those considering investing in picking up the PSVR towards the end of this console generation’s shelf life, well, let’s hope they really, really like Iron Man.”

Score: 4 / 5

Game Informer (Brian Shea)

“As a huge fan of the iron Avenger, Iron Man VR has me torn. I love the feeling of putting on the iconic suit and destroying waves of enemies, but for every moment I felt like a seasoned superhero soaring into action and taking down the bad guys, the finicky flight controls made me feel more like someone who snuck into Stark’s workshop to take the suit for a spin with no prior training. Iron Man VR delivers a fun adventure for fans of Marvel’s iconic hero, but it too often feels hindered by the virtual-reality technology rather than elevated by it.”

Score 7.5 / 10

IGN (Tom Marks)

“Marvel’s Iron Man VR is not the next Marvel’s Spider-Man, and it’s not a system-selling killer app for the PSVR. But despite falling short of those admittedly high bars, it’s still a fun time. While Tony Stark’s story may not have grabbed my interest at all, flying around as his alter ego was a thrill, and its intuitive aerial combat stayed engaging even as mission and enemy variety thinned. It has plenty of extras to keep completionists playing after the credits roll too, even if there’s not much incentive to do so beyond wanting to feel the wind on your helmet… or collecting Trophies.”

Score: 7 / 10

Destructoid (Chris Carter)

“For every few moments in Iron Man VR that gave me an absolute rush, there were several that felt comfortably sterile. That’s not the best ratio, but I’d definitely play more and I hope that Camouflaj gets their hands on Iron Man again: if only to see how they can top themselves and mend their mistakes.”

Score: 7 / 10

Games Radar (Leon Hurley)

“It feels like there was an attempt to stretch out a great one or two hour Iron Man tech demo into a full game. Doing so, though, only sandwiched the truly exhilarating, exciting and fun moments in between less than tight combat, slow-paced exposition and a lot of loading pauses. With a tighter focus on the few hours that excel this could have been a much better, shorter game. Stretched out as it is, however, it struggles to make the ‘holy s**t, I am Iron moments’ it has carry the full play length.”

Score: 3 / 5

Kotaku (Zack Zwiezen)

“Iron Man VR would have been better off being smaller, focusing the game on telling a story and using the suit in interesting and fresh ways. Instead, it focuses on being a big combat simulator that’s too clumsy to enjoy. Strong voice acting and writing can’t overcome all of Iron Man VR’s technical problems, which are bad enough that I would warn most players who haven’t tried much VR to stay away. For those with strong VR stomachs and a love of the MCU, there’s enough here that you might have a good time. But you might be better off just downloading the demo instead.”

Score: N/A

Overall, it seems as though Iron Man VR is something of a mixed bag. While it definitely provides some exhilarating Iron Man moments worthy of featuring in an MCU film, it also allegedly can’t fully fill its eight-hour runtime with sufficient content and has some technical frustrations. It seems as though huge fans of the iconic Marvel mainstay will find a good time in this VR experience, however, so those who have been clamoring to step into the iron-clad boots of Tony Stark’s notorious battle suit should be appeased.

Iron Man VR is available now exclusively on PSVR.
