Protesters have marched in dozens of towns and cities across the country over the past three days, following the government’s announcement that it will ration gasoline purchases and cut fuel subsidies amid harsh U.S. sanctions. Prices have risen by as much as 50 percent, Reuters reported. The scale of the unrest is still unclear as the Iranian authorities are throttling internet connection across the country. At least six people—three protesters, two members of Iran’s security forces, and one security guard—are thought to have been killed so far, according to Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty....

British Royal Marines boarded the Grace 1 oil supertanker last week over suspicions it was carrying Iranian crude oil to Syria. The supertanker now sits in British-controlled waters in the overseas territory of Gibraltar. Rouhani, speaking on state television Wednesday, did not address whether or not the oil was bound for Syria, but did warn the U.K. that Iran views its seizure as a conflict initiation. “You [the United Kingdom] are the initiator of insecurity and you will realize the consequences later,” Rouhani said after a Wednesday cabinet meeting through state television, Reuters first reported....

Everyone seems to be in favor of Iraqification. The president has urged an accelerated training schedule for the Iraqi Army. Secretary Rumsfeld says that more Iraqi troops, and not Americans, would be the best answer to his problems. Senators and congressman from both parties cheer the idea, as do most columnists. On the political side, the administration has speeded up its timetable to transfer power. While once it spoke of a three-year process of constitution-writing and institution-building, now it wants to hold elections and turn things over in 18 months at most....
